Level(3) E-911 DirectSM Honored for Outstanding Innovation
Broomfield, Colo., January 24, 2005 — Level 3 Communications announced today that Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC®)’s INTERNET TELEPHONY® magazine (www.itmag.com) has named Level 3 the recipient of a 2005 Product of the Year Award for the company’s Level(3) E-911 DirectSM service.
The Level(3) E-911 Direct service provides the critical network component for fixed-line and nomadic Voice over IP (VoIP) E-911 services that comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandates. The service utilizes network connections to selective routers and Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) that serve more than 69 percent of all United States households. Level 3 offers VoIP providers expansive network coverage, experience, reliability and flexibility with the Level(3) E-911 Direct service, which is currently used by several of the top VoIP providers in the United States.
“Each year INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine bestows its Product of the Year awards on companies that have demonstrated excellence in technological advancement and application refinements. Level 3 has demonstrated to the editors of INTERNET TELEPHONY that its services are committed to quality and innovation while addressing the real needs in the marketplace,” said Rich Tehrani, group publisher and editor-in-chief of INTERNET TELEPHONY.
“We are thrilled to be recognized by INTERNET TELEPHONY for our efforts around fixed-line and nomadic E-911 solutions for VoIP,” said Myrle McNeal, senior vice president of consumer voice services for Level 3 Communications. “We understand the importance of E-911 for VoIP and are focused on maintaining consumer safety with this emerging technology.”
To deliver its award winning solution, Level 3 focuses on its core competency as a network provider to deliver the selective router connectivity and call transmission elements required to complete an E-911 call. Level 3 works with top VoIP Positioning Centers (VPCs) who provide caller location information, validation and database management.
Over two years ago, Level 3 became one of the first providers to deliver E-911 services for VoIP, realizing its importance for end-user adoption of VoIP. In May 2005, E-911 for VoIP became a key issue when the FCC mandated that all interconnected VoIP providers support E-911 with their VoIP service. In immediate response to the mandate, Level 3 made significant enhancements to its existing E-911 solution by developing the Level(3)
E-911 Direct service, which includes network upgrades to support the National Emergency Number Association’s (NENA) i2-based call flows. Level 3 also embarked on an extensive, nationwide cooperative effort with its VPC partners on PSAP outreach to speed the acceptance and deployment of an FCC compliant nomadic solution.
The Product of the Year Award winners for 2005 are highlighted in the January and February 2006 issues of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine.
