One of Germany's Leading Regional Carriers Purchases Dedicated Internet Access in Hamburg
LONDON, Feb.27, 2003 - Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) announced today that it has signed an agreement to provide IP transit service to HanseNet, one of the leading regional carriers in Germany.
Under the terms of the contract, HanseNet will use (3)CrossRoads® to connect its high-speed Internet access subscribers to content on the Level 3 network, and to content that's delivered over the other networks that comprise the public Internet.
HanseNet operates a fibre optic city network of more than 1,000 km within Hamburg, offering telecommunications services, fixed and data connections as well as Internet services to more than 60,000 private and 10,500 business customers.
"We chose Level 3 because its IP network gives us the premium performance, reliability and scalability we require," said Michael von Bergner, Head of Carrier/ISP relations for HanseNet. "Level 3's financial stability and reliability also weighed heavily in our decision."
"HanseNet is one of the most successful and innovative regional carriers in Germany," stated Brady Rafuse, president of Level 3 in Europe. "We're delighted that HanseNet has chosen Level 3 as a network partner, and look forward to working with them to help deliver their wide range of superior services to their customers."
Level 3 operates a 10-gigabit IP backbone that spans 57 North American markets and 16 European markets and is accessible from more than 550 traffic aggregation points.
In a recent ISP backbone test conducted for Network World magazine, Level 3's core IP network delivered 100 percent uptime, one of only three networks to do so. Test results also revealed that Level 3 achieved zero percent packet loss, and average jitter of only 13 microseconds. While no formal ranking of the backbone was issued, Level 3's IP network proved to be one of the best performing networks on each of the tests conducted.
