United Online Leases Colocation Space in Los Angeles
BROOMFIELD, Colo., Dec. 10, 2002 - Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: LVLT) today announced it has signed a one-year agreement to provide colocation services in Los Angeles to United Online, Inc. (Nasdaq: UNTD), a leading provider of value-priced Internet access. United Online had more than 4.8 million active users, including 1.85 million paying subscribers, on its NetZero and Juno services as of September 30 2002.
United Online is leasing colocation space in Level 3's Los Angeles data center to help house its core ISP applications. United Online is one of Level 3's top managed modem customers, and in September 2002 became the first major national ISP to support V.92 dial-up numbers to its user base. V.92, a new standard of dial-up modem technology, allows users to receive calls on the same phone line that their modem is connected to without losing their Internet connection. It also improves the performance of dial-up Internet connections.
"Level 3 has been a reliable network partner for us and has earned a strong reputation for operational excellence," said Jon Fetveit, executive vice president and chief strategy officer of United Online. "Level 3's data centers are well connected facilities that enable diverse routing and easy connections with other communications companies."
"This agreement strengthens our relationship with United Online, one of the leading providers of Internet access in the United States," said Kevin Dundon, senior vice president of Global Infrastructure Services for Level 3. "We believe our data centers are among the best connected and most secure facilities in the industry. Colocating with Level 3 enables customers to get direct access to Level 3's services, and to connect with additional carriers, content providers and other companies that provide communications services."
Colocation Services
Level 3 offers (3)Center Colocation services in 66 markets in the U.S. and Europe. Level 3's data centers serve as portals to the company's network and to other communications networks, and provide a secure environment in which customers can physically locate their equipment.
