Level 3 Announces Wavelength Agreement With Adelphia

Adelphia Purchases Wavelengths From Level 3 Along Nine Intercity Routes To Enhance Its High-Speed Internet Service in North America

BROOMFIELD, Colo., August 14, 2001 - Level 3 Communications, Inc., (Nasdaq: LVLT) today announced it has signed a multi-year agreement with Adelphia Communications (Nasdaq: ADLAC) and Adelphia Business Solutions (Nasdaq: ABIZ), (collectively, "Adelphia"), one of America's largest cable and emerging telecommunications companies. Adelphia is using (3)Link Global Wavelength service from Level 3 to enhance the high-speed Internet service it offers to businesses and residential customers throughout North America. Specifically, Adelphia has purchased 2.5-gigabit wavelengths from Level 3 along nine intercity routes connecting Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle. "We're very pleased to add Adelphia as a wavelength customer," said Kevin O'Hara, Level 3's president and chief operating officer. "We think our wavelength product is one of the best ways for customers to leverage the cost efficiency and scalability of the Level 3 Network."

With (3)Link Global Wavelength, customers purchase single or multiple wavelengths of light along particular network routes. Level 3 terminates the wavelengths at on-net customer facilities at which customers can use their existing SONET, IP and ATM equipment, thereby reducing costs. (3)Link Global Wavelength services are available in North America, Europe, and on Level 3's transatlantic cable. Level 3's technology offers increased speed and reliability to Adelphia's Internet customers in both residential and business applications. In addition to these product enhancements, this agreement presents Adelphia with a cost-effective method to interconnect its existing cable and CLEC markets in the western half of the United States. "This agreement will enhance Adelphia's high-speed Internet product, and allow us to build on the synergy between our cable and telecommunications networks without the substantial capital expenditure typically associated with a project of this magnitude," said Adelphia Business Solutions CEO James Rigas. Adelphia (Nasdaq: ADLAC) provides cable service to more than 5.5 million residential customers across the United States. It also offers digital television, paging and long-distance phone service, as well as its "Power Link" high-speed Internet access service via cable modem. Headquartered in Coudersport, Penn., Adelphia had revenues of more than $2.8 billion in 2000. Adelphia's majority-owned subsidiary, Adelphia Business Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq:ABIZ) provides integrated communications services to business customers through its fiber-optic communications network, including local and long distance voice services, messaging, high-speed data and Internet services.
