Colocation Space in New 96,000 Square Foot Facility Already Sold Out
Third Facility Planned to Accommodate Growing Demand
BROOMFIELD, Colo., September 11, 2000 – Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced that it has opened a second advanced data center in Silicon Valley. The 96,000 square foot building, located in Sunnyvale, has already sold out of colocation space, and Level 3 now plans a third such facility to accommodate growing customer demand.
"Silicon Valley continues to be the hub of the Internet Economy," said Kevin J. O'Hara, president and chief operating officer for Level 3. "Demand for our services there continues to grow, and, at the moment, is outpacing our construction of new facilities. We already have commitments for all of the colocation space in our new data center and are now preparing to build a third such facility in response to the demand we are seeing in this critical market."
In October 1998, Level 3 opened its first advanced data center in Sunnyvale. That facility comprises 77,000 square feet. Construction on the second was completed in June 2000. The third facility is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2001. Level 3's advanced data centers, called "Gateways," are connected to the company's international Internet Protocol-based network. Gateways serve as portals to the network and provide a fail-safe environment in which web-centric companies can physically locate their equipment. The facilities also house Level 3's own equipment and offer customers interconnection with the public Internet and other local and long distance networks.
Level 3 has secured more than 4.4 million square feet of data center space around the world and pre-funded the acquisition and construction of another 2.1 million square feet. Level 3's continuously upgradable network features advanced technology that provides high-quality, low-cost services that enable web-centric businesses to add value and, in turn, deliver their services to end-users, including residential customers.
Level 3 enables Web-centric companies to grow more rapidly by providing infrastructure and network services to help them meet increasing demand for e-commerce, streaming audio and video, and many other Web-based services.
